Real life lessons from IKIGAI and my Mother…

My Mom’s garden and my son

Ive posted a picture of my mother who is an avid plant lover herself. She looks after the plants and flowers in a religious way. One reason she is hale and hearty is that, the act of maintaining the kitchen garden involves physical activity and strengthens the muscles and joints which normally remain inactive in sedentary work.

The philosophy of purpose of life in the book IKIGAI are :

  1. What you love.
  2. What you are good at.
  3. What the world needs.
  4. What you can be paid for.

If we are able to answer the above, then we are in the path of self – realization and contentment.

When I started reading IKIGAI – The Japanese secret to Happiness and Long Life – by Hector Gracia and Francisc Miralles, I knew about the blue zones of the world, which are places where people live longer than most of us. The interesting part which hit me was that a simple act like managing your kitchen garden could boost your longevity!!!

We need to reorient ourselves and our routines as we are having a busy life or a full life.We need to reconnect with our nature is an important lesson in IKIGAI. We are living in cities and we are exposed to man made pollutants on a daily basis. With CORONA on the loose, we have become masked men and women in our daily lives. We need to spend some time with plants, flowers and animals. It gives a therapeutic effect and acts as a healer, much as music and laughter.

Let us all grow small plants and nurture them around, so that the potential benefits of nature and the flow of life is continued in all its manifestations.

indeed Corona has also forced us to rethink our relationship with Mother Nature. You have rightly pointed out the need of spending some time with plants, flowers, and animals. That is also the way to rediscover oneself, one’s inner self that yearns for finding meaning to our existence, our true mission in life. I enjoyed going through this nice piece of writing by Dr. Kabilan.
